Waves of change: This Hari Kartini, we celebrate women who have paved the way for others in Indonesia
Every April 21st, Indonesia celebrates Hari Kartini, a day dedicated to honoring Raden Ajeng Kartini, a visionary who championed women’s rights and education at a time when opportunities for women were scarce. Her legacy is a powerful reminder of the strides women have made and the work still ahead. This year, as we reflect on her impact, we also celebrate the remarkable women who have followed in her footsteps—those who continue to shape industries, challenge traditions, and open doors for future generations.
Kartini: the first wave
Kartini was more than a noblewoman—she was a revolutionary thinker. In the late 19th century, she defied societal norms by advocating for education and gender equality through her letters, later compiled in the book Letters of a Javanese Princess. She understood that education was the key to empowerment, and her words laid the foundation for future movements pushing for women's rights in Indonesia.
Women who carried the torch
Kartini’s legacy has rippled through history, inspiring generations of women in Indonesia to break barriers and redefine their roles in society.
Women in business, education, politics, and the arts are proving that Kartini’s vision lives on. Figures like Tri Rismaharini, Indonesia’s first female Minister of Social Affairs, and Najwa Shihab, an influential journalist, are leading with intelligence and resilience, inspiring young women to pursue their ambitions without fear.
Silolona: the vision of a trailblazing woman
Our two beautiful wooden ships – Silolona and Si Datu Bua – are the brainchild of Patti Seery, a woman who, much like Kartini, refused to accept limitations. In a male-dominated maritime industry, she built Silolona, at a time when women were not welcome in Indonesian boatyards. Through her perseverance, she not only challenged deep-rooted traditions but also elevated the craftsmanship of local boatbuilders on a global scale.
She was a true trailblazer—long before Indonesian luxury yachting flourished, Patti and her beloved Silolona paved the way. As one of the first in the space, we’ve spent decades honing our craft, deeply understanding these waters, and staying true to the traditions that make each journey so special. We take pride in our experience and heritage, knowing that the path we helped forge continues to inspire others to explore Indonesia’s beauty with the same passion and respect.
The Journey Forward
Hari Kartini is more than a celebration—it’s a call to action. It reminds us to support and uplift women in every sector, ensuring that opportunities continue to expand. Whether through mentorship, education, or simply acknowledging the contributions of women around us, we each play a role in shaping a more equitable future.
As we honor Kartini and the women who have followed her path, we recognize that the waves of change are far from over. They continue to grow, driven by those who believe in a world where every woman, and person, has the chance to rise.
This Hari Kartini, we take great inspiration and courage from Raden Hartini and our very own Patti Seery. We endeavor to continue bridging gaps in society to allow all the chance to thrive since the past is evident that we all benefit from that.
And let’s celebrate not just the women of the past, but also those who are shaping the future—women who, like the tides, will keep forging new ground. Head to our socials to find out who Silolona is celebrating this Hari Kartini.
